"Isabelle had been for some time capable of very strong, if very transient emotions...." - F. Scott Fitzgerald, This Side Of Paradise

“Wallace Stevens was forty-three when his first book appeared. Robert Frost was thirty-nine. Today these sluggards would be unemployable.” i do not have even the tiniest bit of investment in the MFA debate that the article is about but this quote from dana gioia, quoted by john hospodka here, is just the kind of thing i like to read, i don’t know why. maybe because i think the cult of youth is stupid and fucked up and it’s remarkably short-sighted to praise early flashes of brilliance above… uh, later flashes of brilliance? there are people who are great from really young, but why is that more impressive than people who take their time to get really great? SEE ALSO any feminist site that has ever prioritized “young feminists” basically to the exclusion of everything else.
