cureforbedbugs asked: what's the thing you've written that you're proudest of? (is it the liz phair thing) IF they're different, what are the things you've written you liked the most and worked hardest on? have you ever worked on anything that gave you huge trouble putting together? is it obvious that i'm projecting at this point?
i c wut u did there
the thing i am proudest of is totally the liz phair thing, for kind of the same reason i guess as the grade i was proudest of in high school wasn’t any of the straight A’s but the A-minus i got in pre-calc (i know, i’m obnoxious): because it was honestly the first piece of writing i ever worked hard on. i mean, i had papers in high school in college that gave me trouble, but i only ever worked on them as hard as i needed in order to finish the first draft, and i only ever wrote them the night before (TRUE STORY got an A on a college paper i wrote entirely the day it was due, in about two hours). the liz phair thing was the first piece of writing (er, pieces) i ever did that i started in advance of the due date (like, two months ahead lol @ me) and that i really worked on intensely.
the thing i’ve written i liked the most is… probably also that? lol. to make it a little more specific i think maybe the go west post was my favorite. the thing i’ve written for this tumblr that i liked the most, possibly weirdly and which is not to say it is the thing i’ve done i think is best, is this post from three years ago (!!!!), written about a month after i left school, on a vacation to visit my family there. i think maybe it’s sentimental to me because it was the first thing i wrote on tumblr i walked away from “hey that turned out okay,” and because there were choices i made there that i felt really confident in but couldn’t justify to myself until i returned to it much later.
as for worked the hardest on, the liz phair thing, again, though that’s kind of obvious given that it ended up at like 18,000 words (NOT AN EXAGGERATION, A SLIGHT UNDERESTIMATION ACTUALLY), especially the polyester bride post, oh man, that one kiiiilled me until i was like MAYBE I WILL JUST TALK ABOUT HOW I CANNOT WRITE THIS THING. the thing that maybe had the highest work-to-length ratio was probably again one week one band, my closing time post, because man, is it ever hard to write about a song you’ve been continually obsessed with for going on like six years now which is totally tied up inextricably with your first experience of love and heartbreak.
that one also gave me a lot of trouble putting together, but i think the #1 spot there is going to wind up being something i’m writing now (OR TRYING TO WRITE ANYWAY). also i’ve been trying to come up with something to do with the first sentence here for like six months now to very little avail. in general, i wish i could write fiction but i lack the imagination for it, so far at least.
